Hairspray opens in June 1962 as plus sized teenager Tracey Turnblad wakes up ready for another day,  We  follow her as she auditions for a TV show, gets detention at school, befriends  Seaweed Stubbs , falls in love with Link Larkin gets involved in a protest demonstration which lands her in jail and ultimately claims victory by performing a dance dedicated to everyone. Fat and thin, young and old black and white.
